Vale Shirley Tonkin
The Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Shirley Tonkin.
Shirley was a valued and much-loved member of the Panther family alongside her beloved husband Lloyd.
In an era when opportunities for women on the international stage were few, Shirley’s skill, leadership and passion for hockey not only stood out, but helped pave the way for women and girls who followed. Shirl represented WA and Australia during a golden era of Women’s hockey in WA. She is a Member of the WA Hockey Hall of Champions and was recently inducted into the WA Sport Hall of Champions.
We are honoured to award the Shirley Tonkin Trophy to the fairest and best J11/12 junior girl each year. The award recognises the junior girl who demonstrates the same qualities Shirley embodied: commitment to improvement, teamwork, respect for the game and the confidence to lead on and off the field.
Our love and thoughts are with Shane, Jodie and their families during this time. Shirley will always be fondly remembered by many within our club community.
